You can still hunt elk and deer in Montana this year with no drawing and no applications! Montana’s surplus Big Game Combo licenses are now on sale. But as of May 12 there are fewer than 800 remaining and they are selling out fast! That means if you want to book a Montana elk hunt and deer hunt for 2016, it’s time to do it now. Montana’s application deadline for the drawing has passed and the surplus licenses went on sale May 9. A large number sold out very quickly in the first few days. While there are still several hundred left, they are expected to sell out.
If you didn’t apply for a limited license in Montana for 2016, this is the perfect opportunity. These combo licenses allow you to hunt in general units all over the state. Here at Lazy J Bar O Outfitters, our elk and deer hunting areas are in these general units. Meaning you can simply purchase a license and hunt Montana this year with no waiting, drawings or points required.
We hunt two different areas in Montana. The most well known is the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area. It’s the largest wilderness complex in the lower 48 and a vast expanse of excellent elk and deer country. These are adventurous wilderness hunts for hunters looking for the horseback, backcountry experience.
We also hunt the area near our headquarters in Big Timber, Montana. This area is less well known but we believe the elk hunting superior to the more famous Bob Marshall. In this area, we hunt from wilderness spike camps, base camps or lodge depending on the time of year. Like our Bob Marshall hunts, we use horses to access the best country. We have very gentle mountain horses that can suit beginner riders.
